That'll give you between seven and 11 grams of protein, which should be more than enough to prevent muscle loss while being less than the minimum suggested daily intake of protein.
"One of the benefits of eating protein is that it is easy to take in when you need it," says Lisa Moskovitz, a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard Medical School and a nutritional scientist. Moskovitz's primary research is focused on the health of parents, but she also studies protein intake in elderly people who are at risk for a variety of medical conditions.
"People are often surprised when they see how much protein adults need," she says. "Typically, we are only told to eat at least enough protein to meet our daily caloric needs. Protein needs are much higher than that."
A Look At Protein and Muscle
People on a diet have always had to make some kind of decision about where their protein comes from. When it was just about meeting their caloric needs, it was a simple choice: They could choose to eat more vegetables or they could eat more protein.
But as obesity rates began to rise in the 1980s, there was a growing awareness that obese people were less able to build and maintain muscle, something that is needed to burn calories. As a result, more and more people began to turn to supplements and protein powders to try to build muscle.
"In the 1990s, protein supplements started being advertised as a solution to this muscle-loss problem," says Laura J. Hew-Butler, Ph.D., a researcher at the University of Guelph in Ontario.
While most people won't get enough protein if they just eat their minimum daily allotment of the macronutrient, people with more muscle-building needs — like athletes or active people — might need a little more than that. "It's not unreasonable for someone who works out all the time to eat a protein supplement," Moskovitz says.
